Inworld Productions appointed as 'Virtual Africa' developers!

Uthango will develop an immersive 3D African environment in 2008...
[ By Dorette Steenkamp on 12 December, 2007 ]

The Virtual Africa 3D-environment in Second Life just announced that they will partner with German full-service developer, Inworld Productions, based in Berlin, to build the project's ‘sim’ or simulated environment. The developer will help bring highlights from the continent to the virtual world to support causes and draw awareness to the people of Africa. Similarly, it will actively pursue virtual worlds and real world integration via social networks to benefit African development and investment.

“The process of appointing a development team started earlier this year with a formal call by our organization for developers to assist in building an immersive African environment,” said Alanagh Recreant(Dorette Steenkamp in real life), co-founder of Uthango Social Investments, a non-profit in Cape Town, South Africa. “From 43 interested parties, five (5) development companies made the short-list with excellent proposals, namely Designing Digitally, Firesabre Consulting LLC, Hyperstring, Luna Bliss and Inworld Productions themselves.”

According to Wilberforce Rau (record keeper and alternative avatar of Alanagh Recreant), creating Virtual Africa and sharing Uthango’s journey as a case study in sustainability will assist the non-profit company to attract further resources needed and open eyes to the value of being in virtual worlds.

“Inworld Productions is a company that understands how to integrate RL and SL strategies in a powerful way, and will be able to put the foundation in place for our bigger virtual worlds plan,” said Co-Founder of Uthango Social Investments and Director responsible for business development, Enakai Ultsch (Erna Sittig in real life)

Inworld Productions consults real-life companies with virtual worlds’ strategies and presence. They currently operate one of the biggest German news-portals on the Second Life®. They are one of the leading virtual worlds’ agencies in Germany. Inworld Productions’ clients include the ambitious DHL/Deutsche Post project, for which they won the First European Machinima Awards/Festival for the Best Commercial, called “When the Postman spits twice!” The agency also works for Sony Style, Quelle, Bild.T-Online/The AvaStar, Pleon/BBDO, Komm.Passion and Ideea in Second Life ® .

The launch date of the first phase of Virtual Africa (one sim), will be revealed in January 2008. The team views collaboration with like-minded innovators as essential to build the network and points to other African-focused 3D-environments opening in Second Life and on other platforms especially linked to mobile telecommunications, as potential partners in a greater cause. Already in April 2007, Uthango leaders expressed the need for mobile technology as a critical component of Africans accessing virtual world networks, and this ideal is increasingly becoming a reality. The integration between real life projects, virtual worlds and mobile access is no longer as far-fetched as when it was first mentioned by Uthango in Second Life ®.
