Achievements & Some Success Stories

We have been through the grind of very tough lessons in development here in Africa. Uthango continues to achieve measurable success in spite of - or because of (!!) - difficult times. Development apathy, donor fatigue, the global economic crisis and above all, lack of political leadership impact directly on our vision. A shared passion for innovation and development motivates the team and we developed some key assets to overcome barriers. Our Directors venture beyond traditional approaches to implement new models of social investment and social enterprises. Consider reading our company profile under ABOUT US for more on our track-record.

Most of our success stories break new ground in development practices to ensure benefits in communities. We treasure our relationships with individual beneficiaries. People matter most in our company and in our projects. The stories of their lives, and their successes, we acknowledge and celebrate, as these have inspired us...

Upcoming artist employs local women bead by bead...

Gertrude joined a group of supported entrepreneurs when she received an order for 40 000 ceramic beads. She immediately saw the opportunity to create employment for local women from the informal settlement of Masiphumelele, Cape Town.

Gertrude also created some ceramic zebras for the African Art Factory situated at the V&A Waterfront. Although she faced considerable challenges with her health, she showed the true enterprising spirit to complete the order. However, one of the lessons learned from Gertrude's experience is that lack of constant orders and steady cash flow can really impact on the business: Gertrude had to take up part-time work to sustain herself and family when there was no orders from MOLO Africa. The latter company has used Gertrude's story consistantly for marketing purposes.

There is little doubt that Gertrude has the will to be an entrepreneur. We look forward to see where she takes her business and where it takes her!

Belief is not the foundation of our future, knowledge is. To our future descendants, we must demonstrate our willingness to challenge and question the so-called 'Truisms' of our time. We must show that we will not accept anything less than knowledge. Believing must give way to Knowing.
